CASE STUDY
Eaton Corporation
Distributing 3D models in Adobe PDF to staff eliminates confusion because you are not dealing with complex descriptions and flat, 2D images.
Challenge
Eaton Corporation delivers an award-winning line of power management solutions that keep vital systems up and running at corporations worldwide. Given the essential nature of Eaton power quality solutions, the company's team of 350 customer service engineers (CSEs) is one of the most highly trained in the power industry.
Traditionally, understanding the company's complex products required studying lengthy paper manuals containing hundreds of pages of text, pictures, and complicated diagrams. As a result, CSEs supporting Eaton's Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Powerware line traveled with box loads of technical guides in their service vans.
Solution
To reduce the logistical challenges and costs of delivering product materials that communicate detailed system information, the company's technical documentation staff is using Adobe Acrobat 3D software to create interactive service manual content on CDs.
"With Acrobat 3D Version 8, we can easily convert Pro/ENGINEER 3D designs to PDF files that CSEs can view reliably with free Adobe Reader software. Integrating 3D designs into technical manuals boosts staff productivity by better communicating complex ideas through rich content. Also, by creating 3D animations such as assembly and disassembly instructions, the more visually oriented manuals overcome language barriers and reduce errors."
"Distributing 3D models in Adobe PDF to staff eliminates confusion because you are not dealing with complex descriptions and flat, 2D images. Instead, our international staff can use free Adobe Reader software to review all facets of interactive 3D models. There is no doubt about what people are looking atthe 3D models in PDF literally bring everyone onto the same page."
