DiMora Motorcar
Transform engineering design data into marketing collateral to build awareness and gauge market interest before a product is even manufactured
Challenge
DiMora Motorcar is creating the world's first hand-built, $2 million, sixteen-cylinder production automobile: the Natalia SLS 2 sport luxury sedan. It will be the world's most luxurious, expensive, and technologically-advanced sportscar when it is manufactured in 2008.
DiMora needed a way to build awareness about the car and to actually gauge market interest and enthusiasm before actually manufacturing the vehicle. Traditionally though, the only way to present "concept" designs to a large audience was through renderings or build actual physical prototypes for display at car shows.
DiMora was seeking a solution that could use their engineering design data and transform it into an interactive photorealistic 3D experience that was accessible to anyone.

Solution
The 30 MB Unigraphics NX2 CAD file was converted using Right Hemisphere's Deep Exploration CAD Edition v4.1 product. The resulting high resolution polygonal file after conversion had 1.2 Million polygons. The next step was to optimize "reduce" the polygons down as small as possible, but to retain the visual fidelity of Natalia SLS 2. This would reduce the file size of the final interactive 3D PDF.
Once the Natalia 3D model had been reduced to 543,148 polygons, materials where applied to the 3D model to make it look as photorealistic as possible. Model views where then created so that the camera within the PDF could animate to these predefined views guiding the end user in the interactive 3D experience.
The base PDF Template before any interactive 3D controls where added was designed in Adobe Illustrator CS which supports the exporting of PDF layers. The PDF was opened in Acrobat 3D v7.07, and the various 3D controls where add to specific PDF layers which change the vehicles Model Views, Exterior Colors, and various UI tab visibility. The 3D controls where added to the PDF using Right Hemisphere's PDF Template Designer v2.0. which is a plug-in for Adobe Acrobat Professional or Adobe Acrobat 3D. Once the final interactive 3D PDF Template was created in Acrobat 3D then the PDF was saved to disk and was ready for the 3D publishing process.
The final Natalia 3D model was saved as a .RH file and published to the final interactive 3D PDF Template.
