March 2007

Acrobat & PDF conference season

For Acrobat and PDF aficionados, March signifies the beginning of the conference season, with one established event — the PDF Conference, hosted by Carl Young — moving to an online-only format on March 20-21 and another — AGI's Adobe Acrobat PDF Conference — currently accepting registrations for its May 9-10 educational event in Orlando. Look for the AcrobatUsers.com booth at the latter event, where in addition to attending numerous expert-led educational sessions, you’ll have the chance to meet (and interrogate) some of our Ask an Expert team. If you won’t be in Orlando, you can still submit your Acrobat-related questions on line at any time and they’ll do their best to provide answers.

Of course, if you already think you're an Acrobat expert, you can now prove it by taking the recently updated (for Acrobat 8) Adobe certification exam (ACE). The PDF-based preparation guide describes the process and benefits, and includes a number of sample questions.

Best Regards

PDF Bookmarks: Surveying the options
Most PDF files do not include bookmarks. This is a pity, because they are so easy to add, and because the real-world usability of longer PDF files suffers significantly by their absence, says Duff Johnson. And there's no shortage of tools for creating and managing bookmarks, as he explains in this product survey article.

Acrobat 8's Reading mode
With the many new and enhanced capabilities in Acrobat 8 and the program's streamlined user interface having garnered most of the promotional bandwidth and praise, some less-obvious--but useful--additions can be easily overlooked. One in the latter category is in the options for viewing PDF files.

The skinny on scanning and touchups
You preserve written documents and images by scanning them into your computer and saving them as images. Donna Baker shows how Acrobat 8 takes scans to the next level.

Dynamic stamp secrets
In this illustrated article — including a sample PDF to download — Acrobat JavaScript expert Thom Parker of Windjack Solutions explains some of his secrets for enhancing the functionality of custom dynamic stamps.

Popup menus, Part 1
Ted Padova discusses an alternative to bookmarks — popup menus — that perform a similar task for document and page navigation.
