the previously selected language could not be loaded because it is out

After saying yes to an update of my acrobat 8 standard french version, I am now unable to open any pdf file.

"the previously selected language could not be loaded because it is out of date" message appear!!!!

I'm still unable to open a ppt file from the net having the same message.
Then I 've received a can not open acrobat.

I've try to fix the problem by using the control panekl of windows and the add remove option but still have the same message!!!!

You may want to go to http://support.microsoft.com/KB/290301 and download the Windows Installer Cleanup Tool. Run this and then try to reinstall.

Hello,

I've the same problem as described with polish version of Acrobat Reader, and I've a question - what to do next after installing WINDOWS INSTALLER CLEAN UP ? There is no entry for Acrobat Reader at WINDOWS INSTALLER CLEAN UP, so I think this is not the right solution to solve this problem. Could you help me with that problem ?

I had the same problem using Chinese Big5 version. After saying yes to an update of acrobat 8 professional version, I am now unable to open any pdf file with the same message:

"the previously selected language could not be loaded because it is out of date"

I guess it is not a random issue, but something is in conflict with the language packs.

thanks for response - I've solved this problem with the easiest possible way, which wasn't so obvious... Just uninstall and then reinstall Adobe Acrobat 9.

rheber: Your answer is the chicken's way out.  The reason why you folks are receiving this error message is because you installed an update that was not applied to your other language version of Acrobat because of the different "Adobe Bootstrapper for Single Installation" for that particular language version.  Each installation of Acrobat installs its own "Adobe Bootstrapper for Single Installation."  When more than one "Adobe Bootstrapper for Single Installation" is installed on your computer, the last one with the latest version installed takes precedence and only it initializes when updates are installed and therefore only the language versions covered by that "Adobe Bootstrapper for Single Installation" are updated.  After you did your update, therefore, one language version got updated, while the other did not and became outdated and no longer compatible with the other common files.  To resolve this issue, I have to find a way to make the other "Adobe Bootstrapper for Single Installation" get initialized and update the other language installation, but so far, I cannot find the location of the "Adobe Bootstrapper for Single Installation."  Does anybody know where it is located?  I thought that it was in %programfiles(x86)%\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Setup Files, but it is not, because when I renamed to *.old what I thought were the two executables,  the same problematic bootstrapper executable started.  So, there must be a copy somewhere else.  So, I shall keep working.  For now, the only workaround is for you to use the linguistic version that has been updated.  That will work.  If you cannot start it, you have to make a registry editing to set it as the linguistic version that starts up.  To do this, exit any Acrobat application as a safeguard, enter the registry editor and go to: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\8.0\Language.  There, you should find only two keys: "current" and "next."  Create another key, without adding any values to it, and name it, "select." Restart Acrobat and it will prompt to you to select a language.  Select the one that works, also known as the one that was successfully updated.  And you will be okay.

I have an update, although it is not the final conclusion.  After much manual legwork, the problem is with the update towards the version 8.10.  The automatic update feature will silently install it, without any user interaction, because it is the required, basic foundation for other optional updates.

Since the update is silent, users cannot see the error incurred when the attempt to install it is undertaken.  However, upon manual installation, the error message produced is: "The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the windows installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch."

In a KB article of Adobe, a somewhat anologous problem was addressed.  See http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/332/332143.html.

The problem identified is similar to what I had first alleged: "This error occurs when you attempt to install an update for the wrong source installer (that is, the wrong version of Acrobat Standard)."  I simply did not use the correct terminology. 

I believe that the problem in our situations is that the update is not targeting the correct source installer, even though the product is installed.  I think that since we are installing more than one linguistic version of Acrobat, only one source installer is being registered and thus getting updated, to the exclusion of the other.  Therefore, since the other version is not updated, it cannot open because there is another, more up-to-date linguistic version of the same product.

We have to find a way to make the update patch 8.10 target the correct source installer, even if it means toggling between the two.
