It will not work even if the native software is installed , I have used the procedure that is described in the Acrobat help section  but I can't get a non Pdf document to launch from within acrobat ( ...it does launch if I click it in the attachments section)

this will get you on track with a technique for opening a non-pdf attachment from the body of a page.  (the link tool is of little use, as it will only open a pdf attachment.)  a work around is to use the 'Attach File As Comment' tool in the 'Comment & Markup' toolbar.  The icon choices are limited and icons cannot be resized.  recommend the 'graph' icon as it makes the largest hot zone.  At properties-general at both 'author' and 'subject' fields enter any meaningful text; recommed 'double click here to open attachment' so your reader can catch this helpful tool tip.  At properties-appearance set opacity to zero (0%); the tiny comment icon remains visible and remains attached to the main (now invisible) hot zone icon.  Place the hot zone icon at the text where you want your reader to click in order to open the attachment.  (as others in this thread have said, the reader must have the attachment's native app.)  In properties recommend select 'locked'.   (Before it's locked, the icon that you've created can be copied and pasted any number of times within the document.)

here's a follow-on.  be sure to advise your users/readers to make the following setting:  Edit > Preferences > Trust Manager -- place check at "Allow opening of non-PDF attachments with external applications".  Also, if you attach files of type ZIP, RAR and EXE, you'll need to read TechNote ID:  331371:
