Is there a way to change the default typewriter font size to be the larger of the two sizes?

No, there are no options for changing the default text size in the Typewriter tool- only the option to increase or decrease the font size of selected text using the "Decrease Text Size" and "Increase Text Size" tools on the Typewriter toolbar. I can certainly see that as a useful additional feature though.
