Document Modification Error

Hello,

I have created a PDF document and saved it to a shared network drive. When I or another user attempt to make changes to the document and save those changes, an error message appears indicating the file is either "read-only" or another user has it opened. However, the file is not read only, the O/S has not marked it as read only, and no other user has the file open. Does anyone have suggestions to remedy this error (other than restarting the server where the shared network drive resides)?

Re: Document Modification Error

Hi jennc,

Can you provide more detail on what you mean by "another user attempts to make changes"? Are you referring to adding comments? If so, you need to make sure that all review participants have read and write access to the Document Library folder within the specified workspace.

Hope this helps,
Lori

Re: Document Modification Error

I asked Adobe Tech Support and they pointed me to Post #44 on http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc0e678/44

Here's the text:

The problem;
1) Can't delete, update or rename certain PDF files on a shared file server.
2) The server runs Windows 2003 server.
3) The server runs McAfee Virusscan V8.0i.
4) The users access (read,write,update and delete) PDFs from their client machines.
5) No utility shows the locked file as being in use (open).
6) A re-boot of the server clears the lock.

Cause;
McAfee Virusscan logs a 'time-out' event during the scan of the file. This time-out by default is set to 45 seconds but your network jockeys can change it. Large pdfs can easily exceed the time-out window. McAfee's bug is that they are not releasing the file. I have an open ticket #1-194115181 with them to fix the release issue.

Short-term fix;
Have your Virusscan software exclude PDFs from read&write scans. The risk is minimal because PDF haven't been targets for embedding viruses. To do this, on the server go to 'VirusScan Console', On-Access Scanner, properties, All Processes, Detection Tab, What not to scan - click Exclusions, click Add, click By name/location, enter '*.pdf'. Make sure you check mark 'Also exclude subfolders'.
NOTE: If your virusscan is centrally maintained, you'll need to build this exclusion on the ProtectionPilot GUI.

Then - one final reboot to clear the current locked files.

Re: Document Modification Error

Hi Lori,

Thank you for your reply. The problem occurs when a user tries to save changes to a PDF. For example, when I open a PDF document that is saved on a network drive (shared drive) and make changes to it such as delete a page or update page numbers, I get an error message when I try to save the changes. The error message indicates that the file is read only or that another user has it open and will not allow me to save changes. I have verified that no one else has the document open and that the o/s is not marking the file as read only. I am not sure what could be causing this.
