June 1, 2006

At June's meeting, which was our third meeting, we had a guest speaker, Lori DeFurio from Adobe Systems. She spoke on using Acrobat 3D software helps to help manufacturers reduce the number of errors and design changes through the use of 3D interactive models.

We learned that Acrobat 3D is a separate program, but based on the Acrobat 7 professional product. Acrobat 7 Professional supports the insertion of U3D (an open standard for 3D files) files in documents, Acrobat 3D provides more options, including the ability to create dynamic 3D content by capturing the display stream from OpenGL applications. Acrobat 3D can also directly convert many popular CAD file formats while retaining the product structure hierarchy of the original data. With Acrobat 3D, you can bring a dynamic CAD view directly into Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint and then use the standard PDF Maker (which is enhanced for Acrobat 3D) to produce PDF documents that contain the live 3D data.

A PDF with 3D content viewed in earlier versions of the reader will display as a poster frame (static picture). Whoever creates the 3D PDF file determines the poster frame image, which typically is a selected view of the 3D object.

Acrobat 3D Toolkit was also demonstrated. It's a powerful standalone application which takes Acrobat’s CAD capabilities to the next level, offering more control in the authoring and manipulation of native 2D and 3D CAD data. Models can have textures applied as well as different lighting and more. They can also be exported to the U3D format, which is supported by Acrobat Professional/Acrobat 3D (dragged and dropped into Acrobat 3D).
