Ted’s GITMEN Alliance
Post your new feature requests here in the Give It To Me Now (GITMEN) Corner. Tell me what you don’t like about Acrobat and offer suggestions on how to solve problems. Let’s see what kinds of feature requests people have and get them to the Acrobat development team.

We use the Comments extensively for review. But there is concern that the text in the comments(such as Notes tool) could be changed. Can we please have the ability to lock the comments?

Hi Brenna,
Great comment. It never occurred to me that people might use this feature. But since you suggested it, I can see many ways where it might be important to lock comments by coomment author.

Hi Ted,
What about adding capability to fill out pdf forms on mobile devices like palms and other pdas? We recently created forms for users in the medical field that they can fill in on-line and get instant feedback with our javascript. On their pdas they can download them and view them of course, but have to return to their pc or our website to use them. It would be wonderful if they could actually use them on their pdas, etc. instead of simply viewing them.
This would be a great feature for the medical community!

I would like to be able to take advantage of the UserUnit functionality to create large pages for maps and such… Problem is that setting the UserUnit > 1 seems to break all the basic co-ordinate transformations.
This means that things like Print Selected Graphic, Print Current View and navigation from the Page View Pane don’t work.

Hi Ted, Great idea (GITMEN). How about a better tool or at least a better guide to help convert from AcroForms to LiveCycle. Just for fun I converted a fairly complex AcroForm PDF to LiveCycle and only a fraction of the form functioned (after I removed the commenting out characters). The advice from Adobe was to get a short guide to help, but it was meager at best. I admit that I am seriously considering other platforms that don’t break my work every few releases. It looks as though the commitment to AcroForms is still there but is going to be forever?
Thanks,
Tim

Tim,
Great ide! Maybe we need to have a guide in the shrinkwrap or at least a PDF Tutorial on using Designer. I find the Help guide to be just a reference and not much help in getting users up to speed in the program.
In the meantime: I rewrote and expanded a chapter in my Acrobat 8 PDF Bible (due out in January 07) on Adobe Designer to over 75 pages. I’m negotiating with my publisher now to write the Acrobat and LiveCycle Designer Forms Bible to appear in early spring next year. When Acrobat 8 is released look for some resource information on Adobe’s Web site.

A couple of comments on the comments:
bhornbeck - the ability to fill in, PRINT and SUBMIT forms on a PocketPC/Windows Mobile device has been available for over 2 YEARS NOW! Create your form using Adobe Designer and make sure you have the current version of Reader for PocketPC.
AlanK - UserUnits only works on an entire page level - it is no effect when rendering smaller areas (such as a single graphic). Consult the PDF Reference for details.

Sometimes users move a comment to get it out of the way so that they can read what’s underneath it. When a comment is moved, its date and time automatically change to the date and time of the move. This is confusing and annoying. I’d like a way to lock in the date and time of the comment when there is no content change to the comment.

Sorely missing in Acrobat 8 (and previous versions) — midi sound file support in Acrobat! I would like to make more extensive use of sound files in PDF, but wav files are just too memory intensive.

Regarding Brenna’s request for locking comments, it is possible to lock comments in Acrobat 8 as I just discovered. Right-click on the comment, choose Properties and turn on the Lock checkbox in the lower left corner.
That’s a nice feature, but it seems that anyone viewing the PDF file, could just as easily unlock the comment, unless security was added to the document. If the document review process is not complete, adding security would prevent more comments or replies from being added to the PDF.

PDF support for Photoshop and Illlustrator layers would be good. I haven’t been able to display layered PDFs created from Photoshop or Illustrator in Acrobat.

Now that Reader version 8 supports filling out and saving forms, it would be great if Reader also supported spawning new pages from page templates. The page templates and JavaScript, of course, would be set up in Professional, but the Reader user should be able to use that feature.

Layers are supported in PDFs created from Illustrator. Be certain to use Acrobat 6 or greater compatability and check the box for Create Acrobat Layers from Top Level Layers.

I agree with supporting spawning pages in Reader. It would be nice if files enabled with usage rights could spawn pages from page templates.
