Creating Barcoded Forms with Acrobat 8

PDF file includes an interactive sample barcode

If you are familiar with the forms capabilities of Acrobat, then you may have already discovered a new icon on the Forms toolbar that resembles a barcode. This is the 2 dimensional bar code object, the technology behind LiveCycle® Barcoded Forms.

LiveCycle® Barcoded Forms automates the capture of user-supplied data from printed forms using 2D barcode technology. It eliminates the requirement to process incoming paper-based forms using OCR (Optical Character Recognition) or manual data entry. Form users simply complete their forms using the free Adobe Reader®, print them, sign them, and then submit them by fax, or by mail. In some cases the form author may even provide the end user with the choice between electronic submission with digital signatures or paper based submission with an ink signature.

can you use the barcoded forms with combining multiple forms in a pdf package? i have the same form with everyone of my documents so the first page would always be the same but the second form in the pdf package would be different. all of my information pulled is off of the first form would be used in the barcode, but i would have one field off of every second form that would need to be used; will the adobe livecycle barcoded forms work for this? are there any minimum number of forms that have to be used for licensing purposes as well?

hi jillian, great question. placing the barcoded form into a pdf package would definitely be the best approach with this sort of deployment. with a pdf package you would only need to barcode-enable the single 2d barcoded form and include it in your package rather than having to 2d barcode enable every pdf you create that includes the 2d barcoded form. with packages, the "extended" rights and certificates of a pdf are protected within that package as apposed to a single pdf that includes many forms as different pages. in regards to licensing, check with your reseller but i believe you can start with a single form.

i have a client that hosts a series of events that i provide pdf invitations to. each event invitation has a form for the guest to fill-in their details and submit to our web server. what i would like to do is email a pdf back to the guest with a barcode on it that contains all their details, so that when they turn up for the event they will only have to have the print out of this return pdf scanned to capture all their data and thus save a lot of hassle at the entrance to the event. is this possible, and if so what are the licensing requirements (i use acrobat pro)? synergy
